As the fall season starts to creep in and summer comes to a close, ways to get outside and moving seem limited. However, there are many things you can do outside this fall to help keep you active and have fun.
1. Running
Getting into running might not seem like the most fun thing to do, but once you get started, it becomes a healthy and enjoyable hobby.
Running and jogging daily can help you improve your body in more ways than one and can become a hobby that’s easy and free. Start small and work your way up. Your first run can even be a quick jog around the neighborhood and, before you know it, you’ll be able to run longer distances without feeling short of breath.
Because running is an activity that gets you moving and your heart rate up, it’s the perfect exercise to do when it starts to get chilly out as it heats up your body. Make sure to pace yourself and wear an adequate covering when running this fall.
2. Biking
Riding your bike is a great way to get outside and exercise during fall. It’s less physically tiring on the body than running is, so it might be a little easier to ride a bike if you have weak muscles, joint pain, or other issues that prevent you from doing strenuous outdoor activities.
Getting yourself a mountain, cruiser, or outdoor elliptical bike is a great start to getting into biking. On your bike, you can explore your neighborhood, local park, or nearby bike trails for a fun outdoor experience.
3. Hiking
Going hiking during the fall season is a beautiful and serene activity to get you moving. Hiking can be fun and even therapeutic when you get into it.
Find a local hiking trail or park and start small. Going on long hikes or walking on a trail with lots of inclines can be tiring after a while, so it’s important to know your limits.
Hiking in autumn is a really interesting experience as the trees are all different colors and there’s a lot of amazing scenery to be appreciated. You can also invite your friends, family, or bring your dog as a companion to keep you company in the great outdoors.
4. Birdwatching
While not a physical activity that involves exercise, birdwatching requires a lot of time and patience. Though it might seem difficult at first, finding birds in your area can be fun and a way to find out more about the local flora and fauna.
Birdwatching is a really easy and cheap way to get outside this autumn. All you need is a pair of binoculars, a bird identifying book, and the outdoors. Even watching from your porch will allow you to see some interesting bird species fluttering around your own neighborhood.
5. Gardening
Starting your own garden is both advantageous and entertainment on its own. Gardening can be a beneficial way to get outside this fall if you’re interested in growing your own organic foods.
It seems like you may have limited options when it comes to growing fruits and vegetables, but there are plenty of foods in-season during the fall. Vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkins, and most collard greens flourish in the chilly weather and allow you to make some delicious and healthy homemade dishes from them.
If you’re not interested in growing foods, there are lots of beautiful plants to grow during fall. Mums, sunflowers, and marigolds are all flowers that you can plant in your garden to grow all season.
Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. There are lots of fun and healthy ways to get outside this fall.
