Where do mice tend to hide in your home?

It’s not at all uncommon to discover that rodents are living inside your home, most commonly rats and mice. And while there are lots of ways in which to get rid of them humanely, you first need to know where to look for them.

So in this article, we’ll talk about the most common hiding spots for mice around your house.

Now, what we need to remember is that mice aren’t confrontational creatures by nature. They’re not looking for a fight, merely to get by, find food and shelter, and live unencumbered. So it stands to reason that they would hide in dark, hard-to-access spots, where they’ll be safe from predators.

1.     Attic

One of the most popular hiding spots for mice is, of course, the attic. Since people don’t venture up there often, it’s an ideal home for a family of mice. And if they find an easy access point, and can exit easily to go looking for food, then your attic may just be their new abode. The same goes for the basement, or indeed, any other room in the house that’s less frequented than others.

Tip: the messier the room, the more hiding places there are. So even if you’re using your attic/basement for storage, try to keep it as neat and tidy as possible, to avoid infestation.

2.     Kitchen

It’s normal to be worried about mice in your kitchen since that’s another big favorite for rodents. Largely because kitchens are full of, yes, you’ve guessed it, yummy treats. So you’ll want to check your kitchen for rodents. Here is a great resource at kitchenmice.com to learn about how to deal with them.

It’s not uncommon to find mice under the sink. Usually, the area under the sink is difficult for you to access, so you won’t be passing by or cleaning it often. For many homes, it’s also dark and quiet under the sink, so the perfect place for a mouse to relax.

3.     Walls

Another big favorite for mice is, of course, inside the wall. We all remember that Tom&Jerry cartoon, and we all recall the hole in the wall from which Jerry always emerged.

Once again, mice prefer living inside walls because the space is too tight to allow predators in, but just big enough for a mouse to get all warm and cozy.

4.     Crawl space

Mice (as well as other unwanted wildlife) will be attracted to your crawl spaces. Usually, crawl spaces are very easy to get into, with a very small risk of detection. Again, depending on the crawl space, it may also be too tight for other predators, so mice will probably favor that.

5.     Vents/Ducts

Lastly, mice are apt to hide inside your air vent or duct, because let’s face it, nobody ever checks in there. While for others, larger predators, vents, and ducts may be hard to access, they’re a walk in the park for mice.

These are five of the most common areas of the home where mice tend to hide but by no means the only ones. Regular cleanings and checkups are the only way to make sure you’re not living with mice!
