What the “Eye Dance” Means and How to Treat it

Have you ever felt your eye dancing? – It’s like jumping around giving you problems focusing on something.

My grandma was always saying that this is the eye cheering for what it sees every day.

And that I shouldn’t tell anyone that my eye is dancing.

Why? – Because your eyes are seeing everything and don’t say a word, and when they finally decide to “move” you are giving them up.

It’s like letting them down.

Growing up, I learned that this could grow to a critical condition. Sorry grandma, but I have to share this with everyone.

This condition is called eyelid tics or eye spasms.

There isn’t a clear picture of what leads to eye spasm, but doctors have managed to link a few risk factors that could lead to it.

  • Too much caffeine
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Tiredness
  • Bright light
  • Stress
  • Irritation of the eye surface
  • Irritation of the inner eyelids
  • Smoking
  • Wind
  • Physical Exertion

Minor eye spasms are getting bored quickly, and they will go on their own. They are not harmful and leave in peace.

On the other hand, eye twitching could lead to a more serious health problem. If the eye spasm appears several times during the day and lasts for days, weeks, or months, you need to visit your doctor.

It could affect the quality of your life and cause distress.

Eye Twitching as a severe brain or nerve disorder

It’s rare. In this case, the eyelid spasm is caused by another serious condition and accompanied by other symptoms.

Brain and nerve disorder include:

  • Bell’s Palsy
  • Dystonia
  • Cervical-dystonia
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Tourette’s Syndrome

When do I need to ask for a Medical attention with Eyelid twitches?

It’s rare when eyelid twitches deserve a Medical care. But, you need to know all the symptoms just in case you are concerned about it.

  • Red and swollen eyes
  • Dropping upper eyelid
  • Your eyelid closes complexly every time your eyelids twitch
  • The spasms persist for several weeks
  • The contractions start to affect other parts of your face

How to treat it?

The treatment is not something difficult. You just need to focus on your overall health and the spasms will vanish.

Some of the things you need to do are:

  • Reduce caffeine intake
  • Get a good night sleep
  • Keep your eyes and membranes lubricated
  • Apply a warm compress to your eyes when the eye spasm starts

See? That wasn’t so hard. It goes especially for those who are sitting in front of the computer the whole time.

Lots of people are addicted to their smartphones and tablets, so this could be very useful for them, as well.

Don’t forget to share it with all of your friends.
