What Are Some of the Most Popular Feminine Hygiene Products?

Say what you will about modern culture, I do love the move to becoming more comfortable talking about feminine hygiene and health. Feminine Hygiene Products like wipes, cleansers, menstrual cups, and suppositories are becoming more and more popular, so we’re here to tell you what they are and how to tell the good stuff from what’s harmful.

When soaps and moisturizers specifically for women’s intimate areas started coming out, many gynecologists groaned. This is because a vagina will clean itself- and a lot of the early cleaners could disrupt the pH balance of the vagina, which is meant to be slightly acidic.

Most products are meant to clean the vulva- meaning the external area- but anything harmful in the washes still has the risk of entering the vaginal canal. These days, companies have learned from their mistakes, using better ingredients, and getting the opinions of gynecologists before putting things on the market.

Menstrual Cups

I was introduced to menstrual cups in college, and I’ve never looked back. They’re way more eco friendly since they’re reusable, and the risk of TSS from tampons is not present. Depending on your flow, you can use a menstrual cup for up to 12 hours at a time!

When getting a menstrual cup, you can find ones meant for heavy flow, different size vaginas, and made of different types of silicone and rubber. Many people will comment on the comfort of them as well, even forgetting they’re in.

When Getting a Menstrual Cup:

  • Medical Grade Silicone/Rubber Recommended
  • Read Sizing Guide for Best Fit
  • Wash and Sanitize Regularly

Vaginal Wipes

These are great for feeling fresh between showers, after workouts, or as part of your morning routine. Using these wipes can clear out bad bacteria, leave a nice scent behind and make you feel more confident.

When Getting Vaginal Wipes:

  • Paraben-Free
  • Dye Free
  • pH Balanced
  • Non-Irritating Scents

Cleansing Washes

Body washes aren’t created with your vulva in mind, which means they can irritate or unbalance the natural chemistry of the sensitive area. Washes made specifically for this area, on the other hand, can gently clean, moisturize, remove odor and keep everything balanced like it’s supposed to be down there.

When Buying Cleansing Washes:

  • Try Plant-Based Washes
  • pH Balanced
  • Avoid Washes with Glycerin as an Ingredient
  • Unscented if Possible

Boric Acid Suppositories

This is probably going to be the most ‘out there’ entry on the list but read before you run the other way. It all comes down to pH, once again. If the pH of your vagina is thrown off, it can lead to all sorts of problems like dryness, itch, odor, and a host of others.

So as off-putting as putting a suppository in your vagina might sound, it may be just the thing to get your vagina back to the correct level of acidity, relieving a lot of the symptoms of an unhealthy vagina.

Doctors will recommend Boric Acid for people who can’t get rid of a yeast infection with oral antifungals, or if the infections are recurrent.

When Buying Boric Acid Suppositories:

  • Consider Talking to Your GYN Before Use
  • Check That The Product Has Been Clinically Approved
  • Don’t Overdose- 600 Mg is the Recommended Dosage
  • Do Not Use if Pregnant or Breastfeeding

In Conclusion

As we learn more about our bodies, we learn to take better care of them. Adding products specifically to keep your vulva and vagina healthy can make a huge difference in several areas of your life. Have more confidence working out, having intimate fun, or just feeling fresh by knowing you’re doing what’s right for your body. Good luck out there.
