There are many different kinds of wellbeing that can all contribute to living a positive and happy life. In recent times, there has been a much bigger emphasis on mental wellbeing and how important it is to look after your emotional needs. Some even go as far to say having good mental wellbeing can help to improve your physical health too.

Another area of focus is social wellbeing, which relates closely to how you interact with others. This can have a huge effect on your overall mental state, and may prevent you from feeling lonely or isolated. With that in mind, we take a look at social wellbeing and why it’s so important.

What does social wellbeing mean?

Social wellbeing generally refers to being able to have positive interactions with those around you, wherever you are. Closely linked to general mental wellbeing, it’s the practice of being socially healthy.

Many describe social wellbeing as having a sense of social stability, as well as social inclusion and a strong sense of belonging. In other words, social wellbeing is what helps us to feel like we are a part of something. In turn, this can underpin how you value yourself and may even impact how you perceive yourself.

Good social wellbeing means you are aware of your emotions and you can manage them effectively, as well as being able to recognise the effects your actions can have on others. If you have good social wellbeing, you also have the ability to be respectful and empathetic towards others. 

How to achieve healthy relationships

It’s important to help yourself in creating healthy relationships with those around you, whether it’s a friend, colleague or waiter in a restaurant. You can improve your relationships by remembering a small number of best practices, which you should keep in mind.

Remember to communicate openly and honestly, and to be as dependable as you can. This can help to build trust between you, and ultimately result in a more positive interaction. 

It’s also important to appreciate and respect each other’s differences, and remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You should be prepared to listen just as much as you talk, ensuring a two-way street when it comes to communicating and building a good relationship.

How to improve social wellbeing

One of the most effective ways to improve your social wellbeing is to be present and in the moment with your family, friends, colleagues and others. Don’t rely too heavily on your phone or social media to build interactions, and actually talk and spend time with people. Be aware of those you haven’t seen in a while and arrange to catch up and reconnect. 

You can also volunteer within your community to help build up your social wellbeing. This could be a local charity, school or other type of volunteer work. If you already have a cause that’s dear to your heart, consider incorporating that into your choice of volunteering to ensure you feel fulfilled. 

Why not learn a new skill to help you feel more included in the local community? Look for fitness clubs, workshops, language courses or other similar activities in your local area. Not only will you learn something new and improve a skill, but you will no doubt meet like-minded people to connect with along the way.
