Solar powered generators are the result of technological advancements and the need for manufacturers to offer a more green and environmentally friendly alternative to the more traditional, standard fuel generators. Generators have many different fuels with the most common being diesel, natural gas, and propane.
Solar power as I am sure you can guess is very different from all of these. So, how do solar powered generators work and what makes them different? Solar powered generators might look similar to other portable generators at first but the way they work is actually very different.
Solar powered generators utilise portable solar panels to take in photons from the sun they then use this energy to charge a battery in the generator. The power in the battery is attached to a built-in inverter which then transforms the direct current into alternating current.
Then when you attach something to the generator it will power it like a normal more conventional fuelled generator would! Solar generators can power a wide array of different appliances without issue. So, they are actually quite simple machines and with a solar powered generator you also get an inverter as well which means be delicate appliances like laptops can be safely charged as well.
Now that you know more about how solar powered generators work we need to look at how efficient they are. Clearly solar powered generators are the most eco-friendly choice available, they are also going to be the quietest type of generator available as well. You also won’t have to worry about buying fuel or fumes either.
However, when it comes to fuel efficiency things are a little more complicated. So, let’s examine how efficient solar powered generators are when compared to the more traditional fuels, shall we? Let’s get the bad news out of the way first solar powered generators are not the most speedy type of generator.
Unlike other fuels, you can’t just fill the generator up with diesel or attach a propane tank you need to give the generator time to charge up. However, if you ensure your generator is charged early you can take it out and use it right away! When it’s for things like travelling and camping you can always charge your generator early and then just take it out with you.
You could also attach the portable solar panels at the same time to ensure you stay topped up on power while it’s in use. However, you also have to take into account that how quickly you can generate power will depend on the sun.
You don’t need endless sunshine to generator solar power that is an all too common misconception but the sunnier it is the quicker your generator will charge up. Many more modern solar powered generators are designed to quickly charge up though so at most it should only take 2 – 3 hours.
