Samuel L. Jackson, Karen Gillan, And Others React To Martin Scorsese’s Comments About Marvel Movies

A few days ago the Oscar-winning filmmaker, Martin Scorsese, said that Marvel Movies “aren’t cinema”. Actors and other filmmakers used social media to react to Scorsese’s comments.

Well, now we know that the legendary award-winning director is not a fan of comic book films. Martin had an interview this week with Empire to promote his forthcoming film The Irishman, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. During the interview, the “Taxi Driver” director expressed his opinion on Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies and had nothing good to say. Scorsese admitted that he doesn’t watch MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movies explaining: “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.
“It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being” he continued.

Although the “Goodfellas” director has a 50-year career and a plethora of awards under his belt, many actors and filmmakers disagreed with him.

Samuel L. Jackson, who has appeared in more Marvel movies than anyone, had something to say on the matter. He told Variety on Saturday (October 5), “I mean, that’s like saying Bugs Bunny ain’t funny.”

“Films are films. Everybody doesn’t like his stuff either,” the actor continued, clearly frustrated about Scorcese’s remarks. He finished saying: “Everybody’s got an opinion and that ain’t going to stop nobody from making movies.”

Karen Gillan also responded to Scorsese’s comments defending MCU. She has appeared in several Marvel films to date, most notably the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and “Avengers: Endgame”. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Karen spoke in defense of MCU movies. “I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema. Cinema is storytelling with visuals,” Gillian noted.

Gillan also spoke about the director of  “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, James Gunn, with The Hollywood Reporter.  “There’s so much heart and soul, and it’s James’ soul in there,” she told THR on Saturday. “He injects so much of his own personality, his sense of humor…that’s a very big representation of who he is as a person and therefore it’s very cinematic. He’s an artist. ” the actress continued.

And, James Gunn, didn’t stay silent either. He took Twitter to express how he feels. Apparently, the GotG director was most saddened by the fact that Martin hasn’t watched the movies and yet, he’s criticizing.

James wrote: “Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way.”

Gunn was referring to the criticism of Scorcese’s controversial movie “The Last Temptation of Christ” by Christians who felt offended and haven’t watched the movie.

Do you think Scorcese was arrogant to criticize without actually watching the movies? Tell us what you think.
