How to Raise a Happy and Healthy Chihuahua

Are you thinking about adding a lovable Chihuahua to your household? You’re not alone.

Chihuahuas are one of the most popular pets in America. In Los Angeles alone, there are nearly 60,000 registered Chihuahuas.

But before you adopt one, first learn how to care for a Chihuahua. These dogs may be tiny, but they require just as much attention as large canines.

We have compiled the ultimutt Chihuahua care guide for new owners. Let’s dive in.

Physical Activity & Your Chihuahua

Chihuahua 101 begins with physical activity. Even though they are small, Chihuahuas are just like any other dog. They require love, attention, and plenty of exercise.

Chihuahuas are energetic. They are always down for walking, running, or playing. Chihuahuas are so hyper that they can overextend their physical activity and play until they drop.

Without enough exercise, your little Chihuahua can develop joint issues, depression, and obesity.

Plan on walking your Chihuahua two to three times a day. They have short legs, so the walks do not have to be long. A 30-minute outing in the morning and evening is enough to keep your pooch healthy.

Do not open your backdoor and let your Chihuahua roam the yard alone. Since they are so little, Chihuahuas have a high risk of becoming the prey of hawks, coyotes, and larger dogs.

Keeping Your Chihuahua Warm

Chihuahuas usually only weigh between three and six pounds. That means they do not have a lot of body fat to keep them warm in the winter.

When a Chihuahua is chilly, it will shiver and shake. They may not want to play and may instead become lethargic. If you notice these behaviors, take proactive measures to keep Chihuahua warm.

Surround your Chihuahua with warm blankets and soft pillows that the canine can burrow into.

If you can afford it, increase the heat in your home. Raising the thermometer one or two degrees can do wonders for your Chihuahua’s body temperature.

Many Chihuahua owners purchase accessories that provide extra warmth. This includes doggy sweaters, booties, and self-warming beds. These are ideal for Chihuahuas living in climates where the temperature can drop, especially at night.

Chihuahua Grooming

Unkempt Chihuahuas can develop filthy coats that are a hotspot for fleas and ticks. Neglecting your Chihuahua’s paws can lead to painful ingrown nails.

Depending on its lifestyle, a Chihuahua can go six weeks before needing a bath. To ensure a well-kept coat, brush your Chihuahua at least once a week. Long-haired chihuahuas require brushing three times a week.

Don’t forget to pay attention to your Chihuahua’s ears.

Sores, slivers, and cuts can grow into large infections that leave behind permanent hearing damage. Chihuahuas are also prone to ear mites. Prevent these problems by routinely checking and cleaning your Chihuahua’s little ears.
