5 Helpful Lawn Maintenance Tips for Early Summer

Summer in Canada may be short, but that shouldn’t stop you from flaunting that beautiful front lawn when the season comes. To ensure that your yard truly stands out, you need to prepare for issues that could damage it. These could range from overwatering to summertime pests.

To help you out, we’ve listed a few tips on maintaining your lawn in preparation for the upcoming summer season below.

1. Water Properly

Watering is crucial during summertime, especially if you live in central Canada, where it’s generally hotter than other regions. Don’t just spray water on your lawn grass and call it a day. Without the proper know-how, it is pretty easy to severely damage your lawn.

The ultimate way to take care of your property is by watering it at least three to four times a week when the dry period comes. Your goal should be to add only an inch of water to your yard. Try to mimic how the rain falls, so spread the water adequately and deeply to make your grass grow healthy. However, refrain from doing it too frequently to prevent overwatering.

If you don’t have time to sustain a regular watering schedule, sprinklers can help you out. You can find an excellent sprinkler service in Toronto and other areas of Ontario, so looking for one won’t be difficult. They can install an automated sprinkler system for you that could help you save water, time, and effort.

2. Fertilize Your Lawn

You need to know that there’s a big difference between warm-season and cool-season grass.

For warm-season grass, fertilizing in the early summer helps them grow healthier and thicker. Plus, doing it at the right time allows your grass to withstand the heat and drought. Use a fertilizer specially formulated for the season, and don’t over-fertilize to avoid burning your lawn.

Meanwhile, the best time to fertilize cool-season grass is springtime and fall.

3. Mow High

Don’t cut your grass short. Taller grass is beneficial to your lawn because it impedes the growth of weeds among the grass. It also helps the development of roots that will absorb moisture during hot days.

Before mowing, always sharpen your mower. Dull blades can tear or shred the grass, which will make it lose moisture.

After you mow your lawn, leave out the clippings. They will serve as grass feed once they decompose.

4. Weed Control

Early summer is the best time to stop weeds from taking over your lawn. A targeted post-emergent herbicide is one of the best answers to this problem. But keep in mind that while they wouldn’t damage your grass severely, these products may hurt them with improper use. So always follow the instructions when using.

However, try out pulling the weeds before resorting to any chemical product. If you can easily do this, you may not need any herbicide at all.

5. Pest Management

Pests may also go out and enjoy your lawn during the summer. If left untreated before the season begins, some of these summertime pests would populate and feed on your grass, causing wilting and other noticeable damages.

The most common pests you need to watch out for are armyworms, chinch bugs, and grubs. It’s best to know more about these pests before summer begins so you can apply the proper treatment. Of course, you need to consult with a professional before using anything on these pests to avoid damaging your lawn.

Cultivate a Lawn Fit for Summer

Warm days are fast approaching in Canada and one way to go along with the season is to beautify your lawn. Taking care of your yard before summertime fully starts will pave the way for having a green and healthy space where you and your loved ones can create memories. So follow the tips above to achieve an inviting lawn for your memorable summer.
