4 Tips on How to Use Textured Paint in Your Home

Considering repainting your home’s walls? Why stick with boring and basic paint when you can create texture on your walls? Some use textured paint to cover up wall damage, while others use it to create a unique atmosphere.

And when done the right way, you can mimic several different materials, fooling anyone who sees it. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’ll want to test it out for yourself. For some of the best tips from Milton painters on how to use textured paint in your home, continue reading below!

1. Premixed Textured Paint

Premixed textured paint comes in a variety of textures including stone, sand, and suede. When purchasing premixed paint, you may be limited to the colors you’re able to choose. However, applying the paint to the wall is simple.

You’ll paint your walls just like you’d do with regular paint, by using a roller brush. Just be sure to work quickly as you won’t want one section of the wall to dry before you’re finished.

2. Spray-On Texture

Another way to add texture to your walls without having to worry about color selection is to use a drywall spray-on texture. The sprayer allows you to spray a joint compound onto your walls. With the sprayer, you can cover a large section in little time.

The type of texture pattern that you’re left with will depend on a few different factors. These factors include the type of compound that’s used, the pressure at which it’s applied, and the type of nozzle that the sprayer uses. Once it’s dried, you can then paint your wall whatever color you’d like.

3. Drywall Mud Method

Using the drywall mud method will also allow you to create a texture on the drywall that you can then paint over in the color of your choice. The drywall mud method will create a painted plaster or stucco finish. To begin, you’ll need to apply joint compound or taping to the wall.

Be sure to use a trowel to do so. Once finished, take a sponge and dip it into the mixture. You’ll then begin dabbing the sponge onto the wall to create the texture you want.

However, do keep in mind that a sponge isn’t your only option. You can use a variety of different materials such as tissue paper, a towel or rag, a special roller, and more.

4. Faux Finish Techniques

A faux finish technique requires you to paint the wall with a base color. Then, you’ll take a comb, paper, a sponge, or something else to apply the accent color with. Use a comb to create patterns including swirls, zig-zags, or wavy lines.

Use a plastic sheet to place against the wall after applying a glaze, while it’s still wet. You’ll then remove the plastic to create a marble effect. While the plastic is still on the wall, you can rub it, wrinkle it, or manipulate it in other ways to create different marble patterns.

Any item you decide to use to texture your wall will have a different effect on it. So, give it a try and see which one you like best!
