It’s been fifteen years since the ‘Princess of R&B’ Aaliyah was killed in a tragic plane crash in the Bahamas.
She was just 22 years old.
Her boyfriend Damon Dash has shared the final precious conversations he spent with his late girlfriend.
While sitting down for an interview with talk show The Real, Dash shared that “there is no chance” the couple would have boarded the ill fated plane if he was there with her.
Damon recounted his last exchange with the One In A Million singer, in which he spent trying to convince her not to board the plane after she told him she feared for its safety.
Recounting the last conversation with Aaliyah, Dash said: “She told me she was going to the Bahamas, and I was against it, like, ‘Yo, don’t go,’” Dash said.
“And then down to the last — we had the Blackberry — down to the last Blackberry that we had, before she went there she was like, ‘Yo, I don’t like that plane.’
Damon added: “And I was like, ‘Don’t get on it.’ And she was just like, ‘You know, I gotta do it.’ You know, it was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video.”
The New York Post printed the last photograph taken of Aaliyah before the crash with a fan called Alvin Lightdouin. He told the publication she had spoken to him for fifteen minutes and gave him a hug as well.
Lightdouin praised her for a recent donation to a charity and Aaliyah explained: “God blessed me with money and now it’s time to give back.”
Eerily before Aaliyah died she had a premonition about her death. A month before her death the singer talked about a recurring dream.
“Someone’s following me and I don’t know why. I’m scared. Then suddenly I lift off. Far away. As if I’m swimming in the air. Nobody can reach me. Nobody can touch me. It’s a wonderful feeling”.
An Indian lifestyle magazine speculated that this was a premonition in Aaliyah’s dreams of the tragedy that was to befall her.
Damon Dash added in his interview with The Real that he would have ‘checked every crevice’ of the small plane to make sure that it was safe, but understands that “everything happens for a reason.”
“If I was there, I would have made sure that jet that was supposed to be for her. She wouldn’t have been on that.”
Dame said sadly: “I wouldn’t have got on that plane, you know what I’m saying? So it probably would have been different. But you know, everything happens for a reason.”
“You know, and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and you just gotta deal with the cards that life deals you.” Dash added.
