A tragic case of a woman from Bangladesh has gone viral. Rezia Begum’s leg has swelled to an enormous size leaving her in a potentially-deadly condition.
The 40-year-old’s right leg weighs around 132lbs due to suspected elephantiasis. The mother-of-two developed the condition after the birth of her second daughter. She has been battling with her leg deformity for 18 years.
She says she is now dependent on the support of her relatives. No one knows what caused Rezia’s disorder, but it can be caused by roundworms entering the body via mosquitoes.
Ms Begum said: ‘I was like any other normal woman but now I’m a burden on my poor family.’
Rezia is being cared for at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh, but she is yet to begin treatment.
But there is a race against time, as if the swelling spreads from Rezia’s legs to her abdomen, the condition can be fatal.
Elephantiasis affects around 120 million people globally.
