Earlier this year, 10-year-old Kheris Rogers was being tormented by bullies because of her dark skin. To help boost the young girls’ self esteem, her older sister posted a series of photos with Rogers at the center – an act that ultimately created the Twitter hashtag #FlexinInHerComplexion, and transformed the once bullied 5th grader into a viral sensation.
The post was retweeted 30,000 times, not only affirming that Rogers and her dark, radiant skin are indeed beautiful, but also inspiring the creation of her own fashion line – a collection called Flexin’ in My Complexion.
“The other kids did not want to play with me or be my friend because of how dark my skin was,” Rogers told Refinery29. “Going through this inspired me to begin Flexin’ In My Complexion because black comes in so many shades, and they all are beautiful.”
Today, Rogers is 11-years-old and is more confident than ever with her beautiful skin. To top it all off, she recently made history as New York Fashion Week’s youngest ever designer – debuting her line at the fashion world’s most prestigious event.
And as if things couldn’t get any better for Rogers, big name celebrities are publicly showing their support for the young designer. This includes fellow melanated goddess Lupita Nyong’o, who was recently seen rocking a Flexin’ In My Complexion t-shirt.
